WESTERN PROVINCE

Western province contains large unspoiled ecosystems, low and high land forest, wetlands, and huge marine assets. It is the largest of province in Papua New Guinea. With a low population density, and extensive wetlands uninviting to settle. PNG's largest mine, Ok Tedi, yields copper, gold, and other minerals, causing the extreme environmental destruction of the Fly River. Huge deposits of LNG, oil and minerals are likely present. Many clans have signed up with ECOSHARE, and many more expressed interest in joining.

WAGU LAKE

An overflow area of the Sepik river system. It fills up during the rainy season and slowly releases water during dry times. Unique wetlands, lakes and streams are pictured against the dramatic hung stein mountain range. This area is linked to our other 600,000 Hectares Sepik landowner ecosystem. Exceptionally low population density and so far relatively little disturbance makes Wagu Lake and surroundings especially suitable for ECOSHARE.

EAST & WEST NEW BRITAIN

This region still contains large, untouched areas. Old coconut plantations are now being replaced by more profitable palm oil, replacing natural landscapes. We visited two areas where we met several clans who signed up with ECOSHARE. Degraded forests, mixed with primary and secondary forest still offer an opportunity to conserve, protect and restore. Low lying areas and small islands seem already endangered by rising seas, due to global warming.
